Experience T&T sprinter Kwesi Browne produced two battling rides to get the better of Cuba’s Brayan Lopez for the match sprint men’s title at the Caribbean Track Cycling Championships at the National Cycling Centre (NCC) in Balmain, Couva, on Saturday night.
Lopez, who proved to be superior in the lead-up to the final against T&T’s Zion Pulido, had now met his match in the final as he twice saw his attempts to get past the finish line before Browne foiled. Browne, the Central American and Caribbean Games bronze medallist in 2014, twice exhibited blinding speed to win both rides to secure the title.
Pulido rebounded afterwards to take the third-place award in the match sprint by beating Ryan D’Abreau in two straight rides, while the junior title was sewn-up by Samuel Meloney, defeating Devante Laurence in straight rides. The winners all earned qualifying berths for the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games, next year.
Earlier, Browne who qualified for the quarterfinal round of his pet keirin event at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan, proved to be superior to his challenger Ryan D’Abreau in the semifinal round, prevailing after two rides.
In the two rides, Browne came from behind to secure the wins and a final berth courtesy of blazing speed in the final 150 metres, to earn the right to face off against the lanky Cuban rider to also flexed his muscles in his two contests against T&T Zion Pulido in the other semifinal.
The T&T team, now under the guidance of new coach Njisane Phillip, a former Olympic cyclist, has shown great potential for future local, regional and international events. Pulido, in particular, caused the crowd to stand up as he gave a gutsy performance in the second ride of the semifinal before being beaten at the line by the Cuban.
Also, earlier Barbadian Amber Joseph was crowned the new regional Women’s Elimination Race champion by beating T&T’s Alexi Ramirez in a dash to the finish. From a five-women field that comprised T&T’s Ramirez and Phoebe Sandy, the two survived being eliminated to square off in the final ride.
