Minister without Portfolio in the Ministry of Economic Growth and Job Creation, Senator Matthew Samuda, says Jamaica will be lobbying for loss and damage donations from developed countries at the 27th annual Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP27). Senator Samuda is leading Jamaica‘s delegation to the event, underway in Egypt. He is supported by climate negotiators from the Climate Change Division. Senator Samuda said Jamaica will call for increased access to and equitable sharing of funds to respond to the effects of climate change, such as heatwaves and floods, from which the country has not been spared. He says Jamaica is in a new era of implementation and hopes that the lobby for loss and damage at COP27 will be formally acknowledged, and a financial mechanism designed to address it. COP27 is being held under the theme ‘Together for Implementation’ where countries will demonstrate how they have turned their commitments under the Paris Agreement into action.
