Next Tuesday, Trinidad and Tobago will be celebrating Carnival in the usual explosion of culture, colours, art, music and dance, with the regular mass of sweaty semi-nude bodies gyrating to the rhythm of calypso and soca under the tropical sun. While commentary on all these elements of Carnival is commonplace, a ruling by Justice Frank Seepersad last Monday sends an important warning to commentators around the world about the implications of posting images and messages on social media. The case treats with a defamation lawsuit filed by a family against their neighbour for scandalous claims she made against them on Facebook.
